Women, Work, and the Platform Economy: A Global South Perspective

Event description

Event date: 18 May 2023, 15:00–17:00 CET

As digitalisation has restructured labour markets, important questions arise regarding women’s participation and status within this new labour landscape. How are women being affected in this digitally transformed job market? Moreover, what measures need to be taken to empower women, enabling them to seize opportunities and minimise obstacles associated with engaging in the emerging digital work ecosystem?

Partnering with the Just Jobs Network, the International Labour Organization (ILO) is hosting a webinar to address these questions that are vital to fully leveraging the productive potential of women as the digital platform economy continues to develop.

The conversation will take into consideration the discrepancies between the labour markets in the Global North and those in the Global South, the latter exhibiting greater diversity and an expanding workforce of informal employment. The panellists will delve into how these particular characteristics influence the functioning of the platform economy and the unique challenges and prospects it presents for women’s work in the Global South.
